OAP break in.

Two gun-wielding intruders broke into the home of an elderly couple in a terrifying night-time raid.

Bob, aged 86,  and Shelia, aged 79, Smyth, of Windy Lane, Woodhouse, were dragged from their bed and had their hands and feet tied together with electrical wire at 2am yesterday morning.

The thieves stole a gold ring, an antique necklace, diamond earrings and £500 in cash from the innocent couple’s home.

Amanda Browne, aged 41, of Railings Road, Woodseats, said: “My dad has a heart condition and the shock of being woken up in his bed could have killed him and mum hasn’t been able to sleep since.

“What makes this eve worse is that they took mum’s wedding ring, which has huge sentimental value as it was also my grandmother’s.”

Investigating police officer, Detective Chief Inspector, Mick Robbins, said: “This was an unprovoked and terrifying attack on two vulnerable pensioners, all for £500 cash and jewellery worth £1,000.”

The police have said the intruders gained entry to the house through a broken window and that the couple were found the following morning at 10am by a home help, still bound and gagged to a chair.

One of the robbers has been described as being 5ft 9ins tall, having ginger hair and a stocky build.

The other thieve has been described as being 6ft tall, having light brown hair and a slim build.

Cycling story.

A competitive cyclist was hit by a Ford Escort when the driver lost control after racing around a bend in the road.

Lance Anderson, aged 26, of Riverside Way, Oxdown, was taking part in the Oxshire Road Race Championship when the crash happened.

Mrs Joanne Pinto, aged 54, of Church Way, Oxdown, was walking with her sister, Dianne, when Lance overtook them on his bike on Radcliffe Mount.

Joanne said: “It was awful. He was blue and appeared to have stopped breathing.

“But I have first-aid training. I checked his pulse and administered the kiss of life.

“To immense relief, after a couple minutes, he started to breathe and some colour returned to his face.”

Raoul Moat story.

The police have offered a £10,000 reward for any information leading directly to the detention of the Rothbury killer responsible for three shootings earlier this month.

Raoul Moat, aged 37, from Newcastle, shot ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart, aged 22, in her stomach and fatally shot her new partner Chris Brown, aged 29, at Miss Stobbart’s house in Scafell, Birtley, Gateshead on July 3rd.

The following day, Mr Moat also shot PC David Rathband, aged 42, resulting in serious facial injuries.

Det Chief Supt, Neil Adamson, pleaded directly to Mr Moat: “I have said it before and I will say it again, we want to apprehend you safely.

“Please give yourself up.”

Mr Moat is 6ft 3in, 17.5 stone, of a heavy build, has dyed blonde cropped hair, and is believed to be wearing a grey or light blue hoodie, a red shirt, dark coloured jeans and white trainers.

The police have thanked the public for the calls they have received and are grateful for the support of those helping.

Story 1.

A hospital suspended its operations last night due to medical staff finding surgical kits contaminated with human flesh.

The contaminated surgical kits were found at Radston General Infirmary but operations were also suspended at St James’ Infirmary in Radston as a precaution.

Medical director of West Newshire NHS Hospital Trust, Dr Patrick Stevens, said: “Operations will resume as soon as the 200 kits are passed by NSS have been checked by theatre staff.

“This should be later this morning.”
